Lake Tahoe

Lake Days, Mountain Views, and Cozy Cabin Nights

I've been lucky enough to visit Lake Tahoe a few times during the winter, and it's one of my favorite mountain escapes! Snowboard days, snowy views, cozy cabins, and nights by the fire - the perfect recipe for a winter getaway.

Lake Tahoe has become one of my favorite winter getaways, and I've been lucky enough to visit a few times over the years. I usually stay in Incline Village with a friend who has a timeshare there, which makes for the perfect home base. I've only visited in March, but honestly, I think it's the best time to go. The days are a little longer, the weather can be beautiful, and you still get plenty of snow on the mountain.

One of the things I love most about Tahoe is that every trip feels completely different. I've had visits where we were skiing in sunshine and shedding layers by the afternoon, and others where we woke up to a full-on blizzard and spent the day navigating fresh powder. Both experiences are equally fun. Whether you're getting bluebird skies or a snowstorm, Tahoe always delivers that classic mountain-town magic.

The skiing and snowboarding are obviously the main attraction, but what sets Tahoe apart for me are the views. There aren't many places where you can be carving down a mountain while looking out at a crystal-clear lake surrounded by snow-capped peaks. It's one of those views that never gets old, no matter how many runs you take.

After a day on the mountain, the routine is pretty simple: cozy clothes, good food, and relaxing with friends. Some nights we head out for dinner and drinks, while other nights we stay in, cook, and enjoy a slower pace. That's what I love most about Tahoe - it has all the adventure of a ski trip but still feels laid-back and easy. Whether you're chasing powder, spring skiing, or simply a weekend in the mountains, it's the kind of place you'll want to come back to again and again.

Here’s What to Know Before You Go

Travel Tips

  • Best Time to Visit

    • December–March: Peak ski season with the most reliable snow conditions and access to all winter activities.

    • March: One of the best months to visit. You get great snow coverage, longer days, slightly warmer temperatures, and the possibility of both powder days and sunny spring skiing.

    • June–September: Best for hiking, boating, beaches, and outdoor activities if you're visiting during the summer.

  • Getting There: If you're flying in, Reno-Tahoe International Airport (about a 45–60 minute drive from North Lake Tahoe).

  • Stay Near the Slopes: North Lake Tahoe areas like Incline Village, Kings Beach, and Truckee make great home bases for skiing and snowboarding.

  • Check Road Conditions: Keep an eye on road conditions before driving and carry chains if required during winter months.
